Five paragraph essay writing. Topics will be explored through reading and discussion before writing essays. Students will organize ideas into clear paragraphs with correct punctuation. Students will learn summary, compare/contrast, cause/effect, and argumentative essays. Practice timed writings. Select correct uses of all the verb forms of English. Recongnize shifts in construction of clauses. Recognize accurate realtionships among clauses, agreement, conjunctions, transtions words. Can select correct punctuation related to meaning. Know when language is appropriate for a given context or situation, and understand how meaning can change with context.

Introduce in-out-of-class listening and speaking practice. Students will perform basic real-world tasks such as introducing themselves, asking for directions, and talking about various topics. Students will develop skills in understanding and using conversational English in everyday situations. Note taking skills. They will be introduced to phonetic sounds of the English alphabet. Intensive in-out-of-class listening and speaking practice. Students will focus on understanding and using conversational English. Students will learn how to order food at a restaurant, make a doctor's appointment, and interact with salespeople. Students will also work on listening skills such as listening for details, listening to understand a speaker;s attitude, and basic relationship between facts, people, and ideas. Understanding and production of consonant and vowel sounds, as well as rhythm, stress, and intonation will be covered. Students work on accurate pronunciation at the sound-, word-, and phrase- levels. Prominent accent reduction will be addressed.

Intensive in-and-out-of-class listening and speaking practice. Students will listen to materials from various sources and in different contexts. Students will work on understanding the meaning and purpose of the speaker as well as how to communicate ideas clearly. Presentations, discussions, and group projects will be required. Attend academic lectures; prepare reviews from notes taken during the lecture. Melody, rhythm, word and phrase stress will be covered. Students will imporve their ability to both perceive and produce individual sounds and how they are combined in words or longer phrases. Students will also learn about patterns that can make it difficult for them to understand native speakers.

Intensive in-and-out-of class listening and speaking practice. Students will perform real-world speaking tasks such as obtaining information over the phone, finding and apartment, and making travel plans. Attention will be given to explaining problems and giving instructions. Note-taking skills demonstrated. Individual sounds pracrtice and in-class activities on stress, intonation, and natural speech phenomena will be covered. Placement of tongue, teeth, and mouth formations will be corrected to help students make proper English sounds. Students will concentrate on native language speakers to be able to clearly understand their use of the English language.
