Camera Lab

Modern digital cameras are amazingly complex pieces of machinery that require you to navigate a dazzling array of menu options, multi-function buttons and switches to operate, and the manufacturer's user manuals can be frustrating to use. This class will teach you the essential settings for your specific camera, train you to use those settings, and prepare you for Digital Photography I. Bring your camera, user manual, and a selection of lenses if available. Wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes. One hour break for lunch. This class is required for Digital Photography I.

There comes a time in your development as a photographer when all of your images seem pretty good, but you need the guidance of a more experienced photographer to take your work to the next level. Bring your images and have them critiqued by a PPA Judge and Master Photographer. You will gain insights into exposure, composition, lighting, posing and emotional impact as the instructor critiques your work and that of your classmates. Required class: Digital Photography I.

When you have learned your equipment and key techniques, you still need the experience necessary to recognize and create good photos. In the first class, Master Photographer Richard Dennard will show lots of photos to illustrate various strategies for good composition and then discuss reasons to break the rules. After a week of using what you learn, you will return to the classroom to have your photos shared with the class and critiqued by the instructor. Between classes, spend a Saturday in the field with the instructor.

Digital flash photography can be frustrating for even experienced photographers. Learn strategies for getting more consistent exposures and techniques for using your on- and off-camera flash as a main, fill and bounce light source. Students will get maximum benefit from this class if they own and bring an Auto/TTL hot-shoe flash. Required class: Digital Photography I or comparable experience.

The Digital Photography Certificate Program provides a structured photographic curriculum. In order to earn this certificate, four required classes and six additional classes (minimum of 84 hours) must be completed. Students who wish to gain practical, hands-on knowledge in the field will be able to develop new skills and build on existing skills in a relatively short period of time. If you want to go beyond casual picture taking and seriously pursue the art of photography, this class is for you. The instructor's photographs have been widely exhibited and are included in several museum collections. In this four week class, participate in discussions and complete assignments in four important areas: light, subject, perspective and presentation.
